Program – “Planning Sustainable Communities: Lessons from Northern California and Beyond”.

 

Alex Hinds’ talk will focus on the need for communities to dramatically reduce their ecological and carbon footprints – and leading municipal examples of sustainable community planning and development initiatives.

 

Alex has managed county land use and resource agencies in California for over 24 years and has directed the Marin County Community Development Agency since 1999. He is currently president of the board of the California Planning Foundation and has been responsible for Marin County’s award winning sustainability program. His update of the Marin Countywide Plan addressing climate change and sustainability issues was selected as the outstanding comprehensive general plan for the state of California. A former Fulbright scholar in Ecuador, Alex also teaches at CalPoly - SLO and regularly guest lectures at SS U and other universities.

 

John Shurtz, president of Green Builders of Marin, has been a building professional for over thirty years, and serves as a green building consultant to developers, architects, businesses and homeowners. He is the lead instructor in SSU’s Green Building Certificate Program, and a founding Board Member of the USGBC-Redwood Empire Chapter, and of the Environmental Education Council of Marin. John helped develop Build It Green’s “Home Remodeling Green Building Guidelines” and the “Certified Green Building Professional” class. He is currently the President of the Board of Directors for Next Generation, a youth activist organization that teaches sustainability to Marin youth. John has received awards for sustainable business practices and community involvement from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Senator Carole Migden, Assemblyman Jared Huffman and Congressman Mike Thompson.

RSVP!  We kindly ask you to make your reservations for your dinners by the deadline.  It is difficult to manage the number of seats needed and the amount of food to prepare when we don’t know the headcount.  Please note, if you wish to attend a Dinner Meeting, you are required to make a reservation and to pay the amount shown for the event, even if you do not intend to eat or stay for the entire program.  In addition, if you make a reservation and find that you cannot make the dinner meeting, please let us know by the Friday before the meeting, otherwise we will bill you for the cost of the dinner.  Cost is $27.00.
